Community seed swapping website that I've recently launched

I wonder if any of Hayle Allotment Society members would be interested in joining a community seed swapping website that I've recently launched?

The website is www.seedswap.org.uk and it's purpose is to facilitate the swapping and exchange of heritage/open pollinated seeds (not hybrids).

There's also some interesting information on The Cornish Bee Project at at http://www.cornishbees.com/

The Cornish Bee Project

The British bee population has declined at an alarming rate over the last few years - by a third since 2007.

There's also been a massive decline in the number of bee hives in the UK - nearly 75 per cent in the past century.

According to Hayle Pump Issue #110: August/September 2013  http://www.haylepump.org.uk/documents/HAYLEPUMPISSUE110s.pdf

Well I’ll Bee !

There is to be an urgent review of policy by the Government to protect all pollinators, including butterflies.

Councils will be banned from cutting grass verges in early summer and in the case of developers knocking down buildings, new nesting sites for bees will be put in place.

Apply to become a "Community Asset"?

The legal position

There are two types of allotment site. Those termed as "temporary land" are often privately owned. Plot holders have very few rights, and they can be given 12 months' notice at any time.

Sites designated "statutory land" are usually council-owned and are protected, but councils can apply for the designation to be changed, which opens the way for development.

National Allotment Society - would always advise councils not to impose them retrospectively

A spokesman for the National Allotment Society said: “In our mind the spirit of allotment gardening is that it’s a communal activity which everybody can enjoy; it’s a hobby, at the end of the day.

“We do understand the reasons for tenancy agreements, but would always advise councils not to impose them retrospectively. Allotment gardening is something people do in their spare time and it’s important that rules are imposed in the spirit of fairness.”

Polytunnel tribulations....

Our polytunnel (Carol and Russell at plot 3) - having heroically made it through all the gales up until New Year - sadly succumbed just before we got back from our festive touring.

Huge thanks to whoever it was who so kindly attached it to the gate to stop it fleeing further and thanks also to Simon for letting us know the worst and helping us with the tidy up.

If it was you who helped recapture the wayward tunnel or you know who it was we'd be glad to stand them a drink or something to say thanks.

Water keys - lost and found

We (Carol and Russell at plot 3) have found a water key at the tap on plot four - apparently it's been there for two weeks unclaimed... but as ours disappeared when left in the tap we've popped it in our shed for safe keeping.  If it's yours let us know!! and we'll reunite you!

On the subject of ours - if anyone found a key in that tap back in the summer and wondered whose it was - it was ours :)

Easter is always a good opportunity to eat too much chocolate, so why don't we make it guiltless fun too?

I am certain that children will enjoy a little run around and be rewarded for it. We may just let the adults join too!

What do you, my lovely fellow allotmenteers, think?

Do you have any ideas of games and activities that would make the occasion real fun?
